Poland’s prime minister has said that Ukraine deserves a „quick path” to NATO membership because it is fighting Russia’s invasion „in the interests of” the Western military alliance and defending NATO countries against potential aggression by Moscow.

Speaking in an interview with Canadian broadcaster CBC, Mateusz Morawiecki said that „even if Ukraine is not part of NATO today,” it is fighting „on behalf of NATO.”

He added: „They fight in the interests of NATO, and they fight for NATO in the sense that they are defending against this brutal Russian force which could jeopardize many other NATO countries.”

Russia invaded Ukraine by land, air and sea in February last year, launching the largest military campaign in Europe since World War II.

Morawiecki told CBC in an interview aired on Sunday that Ukraine is „the zone between Russia and NATO.”

Speaking to CBC’s Rosemary Barton, the Polish prime minister argued that allies „should be more generous in weapon delivery to Ukraine.”

He added that he believed Ukraine deserved being „presented with a very quick path to NATO.”

Morawiecki also told CBC that the war in Ukraine „is about the future of Europe,” Polish state news agency PAP reported.

The Polish prime minister visited Canada last week for talks on bilateral relations, Russia’s war in Ukraine, and the security of Poland and the entire eastern flank of NATO.

During a meeting in Toronto on Friday, Morawiecki and Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau reaffirmed their support for Ukraine against Russia.
