In his evening address on Saturday, the Ukrainian head of state referred to his meeting on Friday in Kyiv with Poland’s Mateusz Morawiecki, and the Polish PM’s request concerning electric power from Ukraine. He said he had ordered that work be speeded up on upgrading a power transmission line from Ukraine’s Khmelnytskyi nuclear plant to a substation in Poland’s Rzeszów.

As he said, Ukrainians would always be ready to help their Polish brothers, who have supported them since the first day.

He also referred to talks regarding bilateral contacts with EU states, specifically on simplifying border procedures to reduce delays.  Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned the queues at the Polish-Ukrainian border and assured that he was working on the problem together with the Polish PM.

In his visit to Kyiv on Friday, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki also met with his Ukrainian counterpart Denys Shmyhal. The Ukrainian PM later informed on social media that Ukraine would be ready to send coal to Poland urgently, and was looking into opening quotas for the export of 100,000 tonnes in September. Meanwhile the Polish prime minister said after his meetings in Kyiv that “within a short time” Poland would be able to buy electricity from Ukraine.

As Denys Shmyhal wrote, the power transmission line was to be finished in December, but should be ready a week earlier, allowing export to Poland of an additional 1,000 MW.

He said that Ukraine, together with the European Union, was preparing for the most difficult winter in many years, news outlets quoted.

Referring to the imports of Ukrainian coal to Poland, Polish government spokesman Piotr Mueller said that technical consultations were underway. Meanwhile PM Mateusz Morawiecki on social media thanked his Ukrainian counterpart, writing „Denys – thank you”.
