The prime minister said: “I can officially announce that the 2027 men’s volleyball World Championships will be held in Poland.”

Morawiecki said it was “excellent news for all sports fans.”

He stressed: “Thanks to the fantastic performances of our men’s volleyball team, and our women’s volleyball team, and our fans, Poland has again secured the right to organise this event, which has the highest profile and global importance.”

Earlier this month, Poland’s men’s volleyball team won the 2023 European Championships.

On Sunday, Poland’s women’s volleyball team sealed a place at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.

Poland co-hosted the 2022 men’s volleyball World Championships with Slovenia, with the Polish team clinching a silver medal.

Later in the day, President Duda told the European Sports and Tourism Forum in Zakopane that Poland would launch a bid to organise the 2036 summer Olympic Games, public broadcaster Polish Radio’s polskieradio24.pl website reported.

Poland’s head of state said: “After holding consultations on the matter, it is our ambition to launch a bid to host the 2036 summer Olympic Games.”

Duda added: “Our country is growing dynamically. We are confident that by 2036, the CPK [a new mega air-hub near Warsaw] will be ready, as well as a road network. And so in terms of infrastructure, Poland should be ready to organise such an undertaking.”

The president also noted that Poland had already co-hosted the 2012 football European Championships (with Ukraine) and hosted the 2023 European Games.

Poland has previously bid to organise the 2006 winter Olympic Games in the southern cities of Kraków and Zakopanem, with the International Olympic Committee picking Italy’s Turin, the PAP news agency reported.

So far, there have been three official bids to host the 2036 summer Olympic Games, by Indonesia’s Nusantara, a joint bid by Mexico’s four cities of Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey and Tijuana, and by Turkey’s Istanbul, polskieradio24.pl reported.

A number of countries are considering launching their bids, including Egypt with the capital Cairo, South Korea with the capital Seoul, as well as Germany and Israel, who haven’t ruled out making a joint bid to mark 100 years since the 1936 Berlin Olympics, the PAP news agency reported.

Meanwhile, the next summer Olympics will be held next year in Paris, followed by Los Angeles (2028) and Brisbane, Australia (2032), according to officials.
