Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said that one person, an elderly man, has died in the city’s Solomyansk district, Britain’s The Guardian newspaper reported on its website.

Moreover, at least three women have been taken to hospital, officials said.

10 blasts rock Kyiv

In all, ten explosions were heard in the centre of Kyiv, soon after Ukrainian officials warned of another large-scale missile attack by Moscow on Ukraine, the Reuters news agency reported.

According to deputy head of President Volodymyr Zelensky’s office, Kyrylo Tymoshenko, a hotel and a detached house were hit by rockets.

Meanwhile, Klitschko said that other attacks hit the capital’s districts of Pechersk and Holosiivsk, in the city centre and west end, respectively.

Klitschko later said that a journalist from Japan was among the injured in the Pechersk district.

The Kyiv mayor wrote on Telegram that the journalist had been hospitalised, adding that a total of eight people had been injured, according to news outlets.

After an alert was issued at lunchtime, many areas cut off electricity as a precaution, in advance of the rocket strikes hitting Ukraine, The Guardian reported.

The strikes are believed to be in part an attempt to undermine Ukrainian morale, news outlets said.

Russian missiles target Khmelnytskyi, Zaporizhzhia, Kharkiv region

Meanwhile, Saturday’s attacks also targeted include the cities of Khmelnytskyi and Zaporizhzhia, and the Kharkiv province, according to The Kyiv Independent website.

A strike also hit Mykolaiv City, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.

Meanwhile, Maksym Marchenko, governor of the Odesa region, said on the social messaging app Telegram: “Due to the missile attack threat, [Ukraine’s state electricity grid operator] Ukrenergo is taking measures to temporarily restrict electricity supply. This is necessary to reduce the load on the power system in case our infrastructure gets hit,” as quoted by The Guardian

Russia’s new missile attack came as the people of Ukraine were preparing to mark the first New Year’s Eve since Russia invaded their country on February 24, news outlets noted.

Since October, Russia has systematically targeted Ukraine’s energy infrastructure with rocket and drone attacks, leaving millions without electricity, heat and access to drinking water.
