German MEP says Poland should share its gas resources: report

A German member of the European Parliament has criticised the lack of regulations on the distribution of gas in Europe in case Russia cuts off supplies in retaliation for the EU’s support of Ukraine, according to a report.

A German member of the European Parliament, Markus Ferber, has criticised the lack of EU regulations on the distribution of gas in Europe in the event of a full Russian pipeline shutdown, according to a report.

Markus Ferber voiced his concerns in an interview with German public broadcaster Deutschlandfunk, Polish Radio reported on its website on Thursday.

The German MEP, who represents the Bavarian conservative CSU party, said there was “no need” to advise households and offices on how to cut their energy usage, „which the European Commission is planning to do,” according to the polskieradio.pl website.

Ferber went on to say, as cited by the Polish public broadcaster: “Solidarity is important. We had problems with gas supplies before, around the year 2007. At that time, Germany was delivering gas from its own storage facilities to the countries of central and eastern Europe. This time, gas may need to flow in the opposite direction.”

According to Ferber, one of the countries that should help Germany with gas supplies is Poland, given that “Polish storage facilities are 98 percent full,” polskieradio.pl reported.

“This is the essence of solidarity,” the German MEP was also quoted as saying.

He added that „it is for EU institutions to regulate the matter,” polskieradio.pl reported.

Thursday was day 148 of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
