“The enemy struck cities and critical infrastructure facilities” on Friday morning, Ukraine’s air force said, as cited by Britain’s The Guardian newspaper.
Seven Iranian-made “kamikaze” unmanned aerial vehicles were launched from the Sea of Azov and six Kalibr cruise missiles from the Black Sea, officials added.
Explosions were heard in the capital Kyiv, the western city of Lviv and the surrounding region, as well as in the central city of Vinnytsia and the western provinces of Ivano-Frankivsk and Khmelnytskyi, among other areas, Polish state news agency PAP reported.
Local officials said Ukraine’s air defence took effective action to neutralise the threat, according to PAP.
In addition, Russia carried out a “massive” attack with “up to 35 anti-aircraft guided missiles” targeting the northeastern Kharkiv region and the southern Zaporizhzhia province, the Ukrainian air force said.
In Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second city, “critical and infrastructure facilities were targeted,” leading to fires that were “quickly” extinguished, according to governor Oleg Sinegubov.
Sinegubov said there were no casualties but some parts of the city were without electricity.
Meanwhile in Zaporizhzhia, “energy and industrial infrastructure” was damaged, also leaving parts of the city without power, according to local official Anatoly Kurtev.
Air raid sirens sounded throughout Ukraine for 3,5 hours on Friday morning, the Ukrainska Pravda website reported.
Shortly after noon, another air raid alert was announced in the country.
