Polish unemployment down to 5.9% in May: stats office

Unemployment in Poland fell to 5.9 percent in May, from 6 percent in April, the country’s statistics office reported on Wednesday.

The latest jobless figure is in line with an earlier estimate by the labour ministry.

There were around 915,900 people without jobs nationwide at the end of May, down from 934,300 a month earlier, according to the state-run Statistics Poland (GUS) agency.

The statistics office reported earlier this week that employment in Polish companies dropped by 0.9 percent in May on average in year-on-year terms.

According to the European Union’s Eurostat statistics agency, which uses a different methodology, unemployment in Poland stood at 3 percent in April, marking the second-lowest rate in the 27-nation bloc.
