Poland has toughened work permit rules for Russian citizens seeking access to its labour market amid the Kremlin’s invasion of Ukraine and a growing risk of migration from Russia, according to officials.

The measure was announced by Family and Social Policy Minister Marlena Maląg, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

Maląg said she had signed a decree under which Polish employers will no longer be allowed to hire Russian citizens according to simplified rules.

She added: “In the face of the Russian attack on Ukraine and a growing risk of migration from Russia, we have decided to abolish regulations that make it easier for Russians to enter the Polish labour market.”

Officials told reporters that Russian citizens working legally in Poland would be able to continue their employment, but only until the expiration of their work permits.

Russia has been removed from the list of countries whose citizens can take up employment in Poland on the basis of simplified procedures, the Polish Ministry of Family and Social Policy said.

Such a fast-track process usually allows foreign nationals to legalise their employment in Poland within seven days, according to officials.

This simplified procedure is now available to the citizens of Armenia, Belarus, Georgia, Moldova and Ukraine, the PAP news agency reported.
