Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk hailed the arrival of Sławosz Uznański-Wiśniewski at the International Space Station as “a giant leap for Poland,” marking a historic first for the country in human spaceflight.
Uznański-Wiśniewski became the first Polish astronaut to board the orbiting laboratory, joining the Axiom-4 crew after a nearly 30-hour journey aboard SpaceX’s Dragon capsule from Florida’s Kennedy Space Center.
“Space unites us – we are here together, we are strong, we are building our future,” Uznański-Wiśniewski said during a live greeting aboard the station.
The Axiom-4 crew, also including astronauts from the US, Hungary, and India, was welcomed aboard the ISS on Thursday.
The mission, focused on scientific research in microgravity, is expected to last two to three weeks.
