Poll shows broad Polish support for plan to deport unemployed Ukrainian men

Most Poles favor deporting Ukrainian men of conscription age who lack legal jobs in Poland, a new poll shows, days after the opposition PiS party floated the idea as part of a migration policy plan.

The IBRiS survey for the Rzeczpospolita daily found that support for such deportations rises steeply with age, ranging from 43% among 18- to 29-year-olds to 80% among people in their fifties. Religious respondents were also more likely than non-believers to back the idea, the newspaper said Wednesday.

Overall, 67.2% of the more than 1,000 people surveyed on August 7-8 said Poland should deport Ukrainian men who are of conscription age, defined in Ukraine as 25 to 60, and are not legally employed in Poland. Some 23.4% opposed the idea.

The poll followed PiS’s presentation of a migration policy outline that included a proposal to expel such men from the country.
