Polish unemployment up to 6.1% in February: gov’t

Poland’s unemployment rate rose to 6.1 percent in February, from 6 percent in January, the Ministry of Family, Labour and Social Policy said on Tuesday.

There were around 956,200 people without jobs across the nation at the end of February, up by 22,100 from a month earlier, according to the government.

The state-run Statistics Poland agency (GUS) reported last month that the Polish jobless rate had risen to 6 percent in January, from 5.7 percent in December.

Meanwhile, the European Union’s Eurostat statistics agency, which uses a different methodology, estimated this month that unemployment in Poland had stood at 3.1 percent in January, marking the lowest rate in the 27-nation bloc.
