Zelensky says Ukraine ready for talks as US envoys head to Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Sunday that Kyiv was ready to negotiate an end to the war with Russia, as a Ukrainian negotiating team prepared to meet with representatives of U.S. President Donald Trump.

Zelensky met with Ukraine’s negotiating team ahead of the talks and said Kyiv had prepared its proposals for ending the conflict.

„We are ready for talks. Ukraine has always demonstrated and will continue to demonstrate a constructive approach,” Zelensky wrote on Telegram. „We want the war to end as soon as possible. Peace is needed. Security guarantees are needed. We need a dignified peace after the war ends. Our proposals are already prepared.”

Trump said on Friday that he had sent envoys to Moscow and Kyiv with what he described as a proposal to end the war.

U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law Jared Kushner met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday. According to the Axios news outlet, the talks likely included discussions on sanctions against Russia.

A White House official said Witkoff and Kushner discussed with Putin „significant plans for next steps” that would be announced in the coming weeks. The official said the two envoys would also take part in talks in Kyiv on Sunday, expressing hope that the meetings would be „equally productive.”

Witkoff and Kushner are expected to meet Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday.

Ahead of the talks, Putin ordered a three-day halt to attacks on Kyiv through Monday. Zelensky said Ukraine would refrain from attacking Moscow during the same period if Russia honored its commitment.

The latest diplomatic efforts come amid continued international pressure to find a path toward ending Russia’s war against Ukraine, which has entered its fifth year.
