Warsaw city official charged with spying for Russia
Prosecutors in Poland have filed an indictment against a Warsaw municipal employee accused of spying for Russian intelligence and abusing his position as a public official, authorities said on Thursday.

The man, identified only as Tomasz L. under Polish privacy laws, allegedly passed sensitive information to Russia’s civilian intelligence service between 2017 and 2022, according to a statement from the National Public Prosecutor’s Office.
Officials said the information could have harmed Poland’s security.
Prosecutors said the suspect worked in the civil registry archives of Warsaw City Hall, where he had access to official records and databases.
He allegedly copied and photographed documents, including birth and marriage certificates of Polish citizens and foreigners, as well as correspondence with diplomatic missions and government templates.
The data, officials said, could have been used by Russian services to forge identity documents for spies and agents.
Tomasz L. was detained by Poland’s Internal Security Agency (ABW) on March 17, 2022, and has remained in pretrial detention since then.
His detention has been extended several times, most recently until March 25, 2026, state news agency PAP reported.
He has denied the charges. If convicted, he could face a lengthy prison term.
