The US embassy in Warsaw has denounced attempts to distort Holocaust history following false, antisemitic remarks and controversial behaviour by far-right MEP Grzegorz Braun.

“We condemn actions that distort history, desecrate memory or promote antisemitism,” the US Embassy in Poland said in a statement posted on social media on Friday.

The embassy emphasised that the United States remains deeply committed to confronting antisemitism, advancing Holocaust education and defending the truth against efforts to misrepresent it.

“The most important lesson of the Holocaust is that dehumanisation and hatred can lead to atrocities that engulf entire nations,” the statement read.

The embassy’s remarks came after Braun described the existence of gas chambers at Auschwitz as “a fake” during a radio interview.

This was not the only recent controversy involving the MEP. Together with supporters, Grzegorz Braun also attempted to block Poland’s Chief Rabbi Michael Schudrich from leaving Thursday’s commemoration of the 1941 Jedwabne massacre in north-eastern Poland.

Following Braun’s media statements denying historical facts, left-wing MP Anna Maria Żukowska filed a formal complaint, prompting prosecutors to secure evidence and refer the case to investigators at the Institute of National Remembrance, who have since opened an inquiry.

The Auschwitz Museum has also announced plans to pursue legal action. Braun’s comments have been widely condemned by Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski, the Institute of National Remembrance, and the Polish episcopate.

His claims were additionally labelled disinformation by Poland’s leading fact-checking organisation, Demagog.
