The United Nations Security Council will convene an emergency meeting on Monday, January 12, to discuss Russia’s recent escalation of attacks on Ukraine, including the reported use of the Oreshnik ballistic missile, Ukrainian officials announced on Saturday.

According to Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha, the meeting was requested by Kyiv and will focus on what Ukraine describes as Russia’s violations of the UN Charter.

In a statement posted on social media, Sybiha called on Security Council members to show unity by demanding an end to the aggression, protection for civilians, and continued support for Ukraine’s sovereignty. He added that the latest Russian strikes undermine international efforts to maintain security and peace led by the United States, European countries, and other partners.

Sybiha also urged the international community to act swiftly to ensure accountability, increase pressure on Russia, and help restore lasting peace.

Russia carried out a strike on the Lviv region overnight from Thursday to Friday, January 8–9, using a hypersonic Oreshnik ballistic missile, according to Ukrainian authorities. Lviv Mayor Andriy Sadovyi said the attack targeted critical infrastructure, likely gas storage facilities.
