Poland’s chief diplomat praised Ukrainian forces for resisting Russian aggression Monday, as Kyiv marked the 35th anniversary of its independence from the Soviet Union.

Ukraine’s Independence Day, observed each Aug. 24, commemorates the 1991 vote by the Supreme Council in Kyiv that formally severed the country from the USSR. This year’s anniversary comes as Ukraine continues to fight off Russia’s invasion.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski used the occasion to highlight Poland’s early recognition of Ukrainian statehood, noting that Warsaw was the first country in the world to recognize Ukraine’s independence, doing so the same day as Canada.
„I pay tribute to the heroes of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for so effectively standing up to Putin’s aggression”, he wrote on X, warning that „Russian imperialism poses a threat to all of Europe”.
The Polish Foreign Ministry echoed that message in an English-language post, wishing Ukrainians „perseverance, strength, a swift end to Russian aggression and a just peace” as the country marks the milestone.
The ministry reiterated Warsaw’s backing for Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity within its internationally recognized borders, framing Kyiv’s ability to defend itself as a matter of broader regional security.
„A strong Ukraine, capable of effective defense, is in the security interest of Poland and all of Europe”, it said, adding that it hoped ties between the two nations would keep strengthening through mutual respect.
