Writing on X (formerly Twitter), the head of Polish diplomacy said the incident represented “another violation of our airspace from the East” and stressed that Poland’s most important mission within NATO was to defend its own territory.
The blast occurred overnight on Wednesday, 20 August, when the drone came down in a cornfield near Poland’s eastern border.
Prosecutors later confirmed that explosive materials were found in the wreckage, which left a crater around 5–6 metres wide and 50 centimetres deep.
It remains unclear whether the device detonated in the air or on impact with the ground. An expert in military armaments has been dispatched to help identify the type of drone.
According to Poland’s National Security Bureau (BBN), the President is being kept informed of developments. Further details are expected in the coming hours.
