Mateusz Morawiecki made the announcement after meeting Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Friday, Polish state news agency PAP reported.

They were joined at the talks by Latvia’s President Egils Levits.

At a joint news conference afterwards, the Polish PM thanked Zelensky for his “understanding and willingness to sell electricity from the Khmelnytskyi nuclear power plant [in western Ukraine] to Poland.”

Morawiecki said: “Poland understands Ukraine’s situation perfectly well, but today President Zelensky showed his excellent understanding of our situation, of the need to work together in many areas, including the economy.”

Electricity from Ukraine

The Polish PM explained that “today, due to the embargo on Russian coal, we are importing coal from all over the world.”

He added: “In order not to burn this coal at our power stations, we could do with some electricity from Ukraine, if possible of course.”

“President Zelensky told me that yes, it will certainly be possible, in a short space of time,” Morawiecki said at the news conference.

Meanwhile, Zelensky stated: “we are interested in Ukraine being able to support Poland on energy issues.”

He declared: “We’ll do everything so that we can find a way out of the possible future energy crisis in the immediate future.”

’Conclusive victory for Ukraine’

Morawiecki stressed Poland’s continued support for Ukraine as it battles Russia „for the freedom and security of the entire Europe.”

He said he believed that “assistance to Ukraine in the form of weapons deliveries, and the organisation of financial support, will prove effective and lead to a conclusive victory for Ukraine,” the PAP news agency reported.
