Poland’s Wojciechowski named as pick for EU agriculture commissioner

Ursula von der Leyen, president-elect of the European Commission, on Tuesday named Poland’s Janusz Wojciechowski as her pick for the EU’s next agriculture commissioner.

European Commission President-elect Ursula von der Leyen holds a press conference announcing her future team, at the European Commission in Brussels, Belgium, on Tuesday.

The announcement came after Poland last month officially proposed the former MEP as its candidate for the European Union job.

Government spokesman Piotr Mueller told reporters at the time that Wojciechowski would make a good agriculture commissioner with his many years of experience as a EuroMP and a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on Agriculture.

Earlier, senior presidential aide Krzysztof Szczerski withdrew his bid to become Poland’s next European commissioner.

Pole position

Poland’s Wojciechowski is a lawyer by education. He was a Eurodeputy from 2004 to 2016, when he left the European Parliament to become a member of the European Court of Auditors.

He previously headed Poland’s central auditing office (NIK) and was a member of the national parliament and served as a deputy lower-house Speaker.

Polish Foreign Minister Jacek Czaputowicz was in July quoted as saying that his country was interested in securing “a significant portfolio” in the next European Commission, one “important for the EU and reflecting the significance of Poland in the EU.”

The current Polish commissioner, Elżbieta Bieńkowska, is in charge of the EU single market, industry, entrepreneurship and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The new European Commission team unveiled by von der Leyen this week still needs approval from the European Parliament before the nominees can take up their posts.

Von der Leyen herself won approval from MEPs in mid-July.
