On average, the price of electricity in Poland will go up about 24 percent and gas bills will surge by 54 percent next year after the decision announced by the Energy Regulatory Office (URE) on Friday.

URE’s spokesperson Agnieszka Głośniewska told Polish Radio’s IAR news agency that the decision was driven by a few factors, including sharp increases in CO2 emission allowance prices as well as wholesale gas prices reaching record highs in the European Union.

To offset the burden of soaring energy prices, the Polish government had already reduced taxes on natural gas and electricity as part of an extensive package of measures dubbed „the anti-inflationary shield.”
