Building an Equality Society: Conference Report

We had a tremendous Conference in Mullingar. From early on Saturday morning, the halls were buzzing with conversation and both the televised events and the many breakout sessions were well-attended and lively.

If you want to see or share my Conference speech, you can do so using this link:

Our Conference theme was Building an Equal Society, which for me is what Labour is all about.

We’ve set out our core goals: a Living Wage for all workers, collective bargaining rights, rent caps and a rent freeze, building 80,000 homes, continued investment in primary healthcare, genuinely free education starting at primary level, and significant investment in state enterprises to drive a real transformation of our economy to reduce carbon emissions while creating the sustainable jobs of the future.

In my speech to members, I also set out my determination to pause the rapid rise of the pension age. It should remain at 66, not increase to 67 in 2021. With a surplus of €3.8 billion in the Social Insurance Fund, we can afford the relatively modest cost of allowing people to access the State Pension at 66 rather than forcing them to pretend to be “Jobseekers”. We do need to adjust to both living longer and working longer, but we can and should give society more time to adjust.

I also set out my determination to ban political advertising on social media during election times, including on Facebook and Instagram.

My sincere thanks to everyone who was involved in making Conference such a great success. Thank you to every member who travelled to Mullingar for the occasion. Conference is all about our members and the Labour Party would be nothing without you.

We need to get the message out that Labour is offering a real alternative to three and half years of depressing, ineffectual partnership government by Fine Gael and Fianna Fáil. It is time to end the current Dáil, and Labour is ready for the next general election as soon as it comes.

It would help us get the message out if you could please share the link to my Conference speech and encourage others, including those outside the Party, to listen to what we have to offer.

In solidarity,
