The Polish foreign minister said on Monday that a migrant crisis on the European Union’s border with Belarus was a 'hybrid war’ against countries on the eastern edge of NATO, including Poland and Lithuania.

Zbigniew Rau was speaking in Vilnius where he discussed a range of bilateral and regional issues with his Lithuanian counterpart Gabrielius Landsbergis.

The two top diplomats talked about security policy and measures to contain the ongoing migrant crisis on the border with Belarus, according to the Polish foreign ministry.

Speaking at a joint news conference with Landsbergis after the talks, Rau said Poland and Lithuania „shared a common heritage and a community of values.”

He also said both countries „have recently come under multiple pressures resulting from a hybrid war against NATO’s eastern flank.”

He told reporters that the standoff had been orchestrated „by our neighbors to the east” using „migrants brought especially for this purpose from various countries in the Middle East.”

Rau said Poland and Lithuania stood together in the face of this „common threat.”

„We are able to achieve a lot together in the spirit of full understanding, solidarity and determination to overcome this crisis,” he added.

While in Vilnius, Rau also met with Lithuania’s President Gitanas Nausėda, Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and parliamentary Speaker Saimas Viktorija Čmilytė-Nielsen.

Rau’s trip to Vilnius marked 30 years since Poland and Lithuania reestablished diplomatic relations, the Polish foreign ministry said in a statement.

It noted that Poland recognized Lithuania’s independence from the Soviet Union on August 26, 1991 and the two countries reestablished diplomatic relations on September 5, 1991.
