The Olympic Picnic, organised by the Polish Olympic Committee near its seat in Warsaw, aimed to showcase sports for the games and promote a healthy lifestyle.

For the first time in its 20-year history, the event also featured the stand of the Paralympic Committee.

Visitors to the event were able to try their hand at a number of sports and rub shoulders with 200 Polish Olympic medallists.

Among them was two-time Olympic rowing champion Robert Sycz, who said that the event was “mainly for children … who can get a taste for sport, try archery, shooting”.

He added that there was usually a hike in sign-ups to extracurricular sports lessons after such events.

The picnic also aimed to promote the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games which will be held this October.

Forty-two Polish 15-18-year-olds representing 11 different sports have already qualified for the games and try-outs will continue until the end of July. (vb)
