A 37-year-old Polish cyclist who was recently found dead in Mexico was probably murdered in a mugging, Mexican prosecutors have said, according to Poland’s PAP news agency.

Krzysztof Chmielewski was probably killed by a blow to the head with a blunt object, PAP said.

According to state broadcaster Polish Radio, Chmielewski’s body was found during a search for German cyclist Holger Franz Hagenbusch, who went missing on April 20.

The 43-year-old German was killed by a shot to the head, PAP reported.

Chmielewski was last heard from on April 19.

His decapitated body was found on April 26 at the bottom of a 200-metre-deep gorge alongside a highway near San Cristobal, southern Mexico.

Luis Alberto Sanchez, a Mexican prosecutor, said that wild animals may have detached Chmielewski’s head from his body, but he did not rule out that he was beheaded by his murderers.

His body had been there for more than a week, PAP said.

Hagenbusch’s body was found on May 4, some 200 metres from the site where Chmielewski’s body was found.

According to prosecutors, the bodies were probably dumped there after being killed at a different location.

Chmielewski had been cycling from Canada to Argentina.
